Visit an airport. After the visit, report on how the facilities are used, how runways are numbered, and how runways are determined to be "active."
An airport visit is a great way to see Aviation in action!
Most airports, especially smaller/regional airports, welcome visitors – especially Scouts! Here is an Airport Locator that can help you find one in your area. Your Counselor may also have some ideas or even connections that can get you a great tour.
When you go on the tour, here is what you can/should ask for:
- Welcome and Safety Briefing
- Tour of the Airport Layout
- Runway/Taxiway Diagram and Numbering
- Control Tower
- Weather Briefing: Include a session on how pilots use weather information and forecasts.
- Aircraft and Equipment Tour
- Preflight Inspection Activity (this is another requirement)
- Airport Services and Careers (e.g. private/corporate travel, Fire and Rescue Services)
