With your parents or guardian’s permission, take a discovery flight in an aircraft.

Record the date, place, type of aircraft, and duration of flight.  Report on your impressions of the flight.

Going on a discovery flight is an amazing experience that, with some effort, should be possible for every Scout to do. There are a number of organizations who offer free (or very inexpensive) discovery flights for Scouts:

The Experimental Aircraft Association(“EAA”) Young Eagles Program

  • This program offers free discovery flights for youth aged 8–17.
  • Visit the Experimental Aircraft Association(“EAA”) Young Eagles Program website to find a local chapter and contact their Young Eagles coordinator.
  • The Experimental Aircraft Association(“EAA”) Young Eagles Program pilots are experienced and often combine the flight with an aviation education session.

Local Flight Schools and Airports

  • Many flight schools offer discovery flights for a nominal fee.
  • Contact local schools or Fixed-Base Operators (FBOs) to negotiate group rates for Scouts.
Plan ahead

Make sure you plan your day well in advance (though, weather may change those plans!) and thank your pilot for giving you such a great experience!

Which type(s) of aircraft have you ever flown in? Check all that apply.

Flying (in a simulator, or in real life) is very exciting. But there are a lot of things you must know about the infrastructure of airports and FAA regulations before you take off!
