Pre-flighting an airplane is the most important thing that pilots do before flight.  It consists of a number of steps, specific to that aircraft.  In general, preflight inspections will include the following:

Why do you check for water and other contaminants in the fuel during the preflight?

Most preflight inspections do not uncover any major issues because the scheduled maintenance consists of a rigorous set of requirements performed by a trained and certified mechanic.
