Waypoint
noun /ˈwāˌpoint/
A stopping place on a journey. In modern terms, it most often refers to coordinates which specify one’s location at each stage along the way. Here we will use Waypoints to identify the stages of The Adventure Plan.
Preparation for any adventure is part planning and part practice. This waypoint gets you ready for your Adventure.
Gearing Up
What equipment is needed for your adventure? Here are some questions to consider.
Group Equipment
- Cooking – stoves, pots and pans are often best brought as group gear. What are you going to need?
Individual Equipment
- 10 Essentials
- Clothing – what specialized clothing are you going to need for your adventure? Discuss this with your group
- Sleeping – sleeping bags or bedding? Tents or cabins? What is best for this adventure?
Menus and Meals (Provisions)
Good meals are essential for a great Adventure. As you plan your Menus, consider the following:
- How much time do we have to prepare the meals?
- Can the weather affect your cooking plans? (Rain, snow, wind)
- What do I need to fix this meal? (Stove, pans, utensils)
- Do I have a balance meal? (Foods from different food groups)
- Do I have anyone with food allergy? (Dairy, Peanut)
- Do I have anyone with a special dietary need? (Vegetarian, no salt, no pork, or no beef)
- What will everyone drink?
- Shopping List – once you know what you want to eat create shopping lists for each store.
- Re-Packaging Food – no need to take all the extra packaging with you. Leave the boxes at home and save space.
- Duty Roster – knowing who is responsible for what chores ahead of time makes it easy.
- Water Purification – filters, UV lights, or chemical water purifier.
Skill Preparation
Activity Skills – learn and practice the skills you need for your adventure, before you leave. For example If you are going rock climbing, learn Climb on Safety and the skills to do it.
Shake Down Event – practice the skills you need for an adventure with one or more practice camp-outs close to home. This lets you know if the equipment will work as planned.
