Waypoint #5
The Adventure
Waypoint
noun /ˈwāˌpoint/
A stopping place on a journey. In modern terms, it most often refers to coordinates which specify one’s location at each stage along the way. Here we will use Waypoints to identify the stages of The Adventure Plan.
You’ve planned, you practiced, everything is ready to go… now is time for fun. At this point, you should be totally prepared, refer back to your previous plans and forms as needed.
Departure
What equipment is needed for your adventure? Here are some questions to consider:
- Meeting place
- Confirm reservations
- Gear check if needed
Leave No Trace
Remember the Outdoor Code and to leave no trace. Take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints.
Adventure Check Ins
Along your journey check in with home to provide progress. This can be done by cell phone, text messages, designated personnel at set locations, or satellite phone / messengers. (Note: this should be part of your emergency communication plans.
Document the following:
- Photos – Photos are a great way to remember the trip while still leaving no trace. Take a lot of pictures and videos to share at the after party and to share with parents later.
- Video – Probably the best way to share and adventure is through video. Even phones have the capability to capture and edit fun moments. With practice and skill your adventures may even go viral.
- Journal – While photos and videos are a great way to remember what you did, a journal is a great way to remember how you felt. Keep a good journal of your adventure to help you remember the fun you had later down the road.
