Requirement

While camping in the outdoors, cook at least one breakfast, one lunch, and one dinner for your patrol from the meals you have planned for requirement 8(c). At least one of those meals must be a trail meal requiring the use of a lightweight stove.

Camp Cooking

After planning the patrol menu in Requirement 8(c), Scouts put that plan into action by cooking outdoors. Scouts should prepare at least one breakfast, one lunch, and one dinner for the patrol, using the planned menu, recipes, and food list. At least one of these meals must be a trail meal cooked with a lightweight stove.

To complete the meal successfully, Scouts can think through three stages: before cooking, while cooking, and after the meal. Good outdoor cooking includes planning, preparation, safe stove use, clean hands and utensils, protected food, careful timing, and proper cleanup.

Before Cooking

Scouts should check that they have the ingredients, recipe, stove or cooking equipment, fuel, water, utensils, and cleanup supplies needed for the meal. They should also review stove safety, wash hands, keep food protected, and make sure the cooking area is safe and organized.

While Cooking

During the meal cooking, Scouts should follow the recipe, manage timing, cook food safely, and work with the patrol so the meal is prepared and served properly. The trail meal should be simple enough to prepare with a lightweight stove and the gear suitable to be carried on a trek.

After the Meal

After cooking, Scouts should clean pots, pans, utensils, and eating gear. Leftover food and scraps should be packed out or stored properly, and dishwater should be disposed of correctly. The patrol should leave the cooking area clean and safe.

Safety Reminder

Safety Reminder

A trail meal using a lightweight stove still needs careful stove safety. Scouts should never use a stove inside or near a tent, should never leave a burning stove unattended, and should let the stove cool completely before packing it away.
