Prepare for an overnight campout with your patrol by doing the following:

Requirement

Pack your own gear and your share of the patrol equipment and food for proper carrying. Show that your pack is right for quickly getting what is needed first, and that it has been assembled properly for comfort, weight, balance, size, and neatness.

How to Pack a Backpack

After the campout is planned and the food and gear are gathered, pack everything so it is comfortable to carry and easy to use on the trail.

If there is room, stow the sleeping bag inside the pack. If it must be carried outside the pack, protect it from the weather with a ground cloth, plastic trash-can liner, or waterproof cover. It can be tucked under the pack’s top flap or strapped securely to an external frame.

Place heavier gear close to your back

Heavier items are easier to carry when they sit close to the body and near the middle of the pack.

Use soft items to cushion your back

Clothing and other soft gear can help create a comfortable layer between your back and harder items.

Place lighter gear farther from your back

Lighter items can go toward the outside of the pack.

Pack less-used items lower down

Gear that will not be needed until camp, such as most sleeping items, can usually go lower in the pack.

Keep quick-use items easy to reach

Rain gear, flashlight, first-aid kit, water bottle, and trail food should be near the top of the pack or in outside pockets.
