SUMMARY
Proper footwear is important when hiking and trekking to ensure proper safety and foot support for the hiker. Proper footwear can also directly impact your safety and overall outdoor experience by preventing injuries and fatigue. The right shoes provide stability, support, and protection against potential hazards on the trail.
GENERAL INFORMATION
All Scouts and adults should have proper hiking and trekking footwear before going on any hiking or trekking outing. It’s crucial to choose footwear that suits the specific terrain and conditions of your adventure. For instance, opt for sturdy hiking boots with ankle support when tackling uneven or rocky trails, as they reduce the risk of twisted ankles and provide stability on challenging terrain.
In wet or muddy conditions, waterproof or water-resistant footwear is essential to keep your feet dry and prevent issues like trench foot. On the other hand, for hot and dry environments, breathable shoes with good ventilation can help prevent overheating and discomfort.
Regularly inspect your footwear for signs of wear and tear, such as worn-out treads, damaged soles, or compromised stitching. Investing in high-quality footwear and maintaining it properly will extend its lifespan and ensure that it continues to provide the necessary support on your hiking or backpacking adventures.
A few tips:
- Measure your foot so you know your proper size. Properly fitting footwear is incredibly important. Ill-fitting shoes can lead to discomfort, blisters, and even more severe issues such as foot injuries or strained muscles. Before embarking on a hiking or backpacking trip, take the time to try on different styles and brands, considering factors like arch support and toe room. Pay attention to the width and length of the shoe to ensure a snug yet comfortable fit.
- Try on various hiking boots that you like. Be sure to walk around the store in them, don’t just try them on and stand in them.
- Make sure you try them on with the type of sock(s) you will wear with the boots
- Be sure to wear any foot inserts, or other orthotics, when you try on the hiking boots, since you will want to make sure they fit inside the boots.
- Make sure your feet feel supported in the boots and that your ankle is stable (not rolling). The bottom of the shoe should be stable and not easily bendable. Remember when carrying a heavy backpack, the load on your feet increases. Adequate ankle support becomes even more critical to prevent strains and injuries.
- Practice lacing your boots properly and make sure they still fit. (Usually, the salesperson at the store can assist with this.)
- Depending on your adventure, it may make sense to buy foot wear that is waterproof or made of material that can be waterproofed. Wet shoes and socks are not fun and may result in blisters forming.
- Regardless of the design and material of your footwear, wear them several times before using them on your camping or trekking outing. Gradually extend the length of walks on which you wear them, and they will be more comfortable and broken in when you hit the trail. Breaking in new shoes before embarking on a lengthy hike or backpacking trip will help avoid discomfort and blisters.
- Be sure to check your hiking boots before every outing, especially during adolescence as your feet may have grown significantly year over year.
Be mindful of the unique challenges presented by different terrains. Whether navigating rocky paths, muddy trails, or steep ascents, the right footwear enhances your stability and reduces the risk of slips or falls. Prioritize safety by choosing appropriate footwear for each specific hiking or backpacking excursion and remember that well-maintained and properly fitting shoes are your first line of defense against potential outdoor hazards.
