Explain and, where possible, show the points of good hiking practices including proper outdoor ethics, hiking safety in the daytime and at night, courtesy to others, choice of footwear, and proper care of feet and footwear.

A Scout is Courteous

One of the most important components of outdoor ethics is to be courteous toward other visitors. It helps all visitors enjoy their outdoor experience. Principle 7 of Leave No Trace encourages hikers to practice courtesy in a variety of ways.

Respect others on the trail

Speak softly and avoid loud devices—leave radios at home and keep cellphones off unless needed for emergencies. Enjoy the quiet and be courteous to fellow hikers and campers.

Follow trail etiquette

Yield to uphill hikers and step aside carefully to reduce impact. When traveling with a group, walk in a single-file line to create space for others to pass the group. If you encounter horseback riders, ask the lead rider for guidance—usually, you’ll be asked to step downhill and wait quietly as they pass. Keep your pets on a leash and keep them close to you as the owner. Do not approach pets while on the trail.

Hiking Safety in Daytime and Nighttime

Night hiking tips to stay safe

On nights with full moons, there is an advantage to hiking at night. Remember the Outdoor Code and be considerate by minimizing unnecessary lights and noise. Use extra care to stay on your route, and keep the members of your group together.

Choice of Footwear and Proper Care of Feet and Footwear

For short walks on easy trails, most shoes will work. For longer hikes, wear trail running shoes or lightweight boots made from tough fabric. Avoid wearing heavy boots unless you’re embarking on a mountaineering or backpacking trip. Leather boots offer extra support and keep your feet dry in rain or snow. You won’t need mountaineering boots for everyday hikes.

Choosing the Right Shoes

Caring for Shoes and Boots

Where are you going?

Remove dried dirt by brushing it off, or clean the uppers using warm water and a cloth.

When will you return?

Let wet boots dry at room temperature and avoid placing them near heat, which can damage nylon and stiffen leather.

Who is hiking with you?

To protect leather, apply boot dressing with beeswax, silicone, or natural oils.
