The effect of technology on your family.

Technology and Family Life

Technology can make life easier, like using a computer for schoolwork or staying in touch with loved ones. However, excessive screen time can take away from other important activities.

Suggested Family Activity: Observe
and Learn: A Short Activity

Before the family meeting, Scouts and the family will keep a simple two-day weekend journal to track their family's use of technology during planned activities.

Suggested questions to guide you:

  • How often are phones out during dinner?
  • How many family conversations get interrupted by a notification or a text?
  • How does it feel when you or a family member is on a device during a family activity?

1. Facilitate Family Discussion:

Scouts and their family share their observations from the week.

2. Brainstorm Solutions:

Keep in mind everyone's observations and create a family tech rules list. Examples: "No phones at the dinner table," or "Put away devices during movie night."

3. Debrief Together:

Discuss how the tech-free activity went. Was it easier or harder than you expected?
