Sustaining Scouting – A Development Perspective

In February 2017, Denzel Washington was speaking at the NAACP Image awards, and this notable quote was part of that speech:

“Without commitment, you’ll never start, but importantly, without consistency, you’ll never finish…”

Think about how important commitment and consistency are to our Scouting movement.

Committed and consistent commissioners are critical to sustaining Scouting. We are supposed to serve as the critical link between units and needed resources. For commissioners to be at our very best, we need to make time to improve our skills.

There is a whole continuum of development opportunities for commissioners:

Think about these development opportunities and decide where you want to improve. In some instances, you will improve by attending; in some instances, you will improve by leading or teaching.

National-level Training Events

Your service team is committed to providing numerous development opportunities each year. You can access these opportunities here:

National Level Training Events | Boy Scouts of America (scouting.org)

Weeklong Conferences are in-depth, in-person learning events. Registration is now open for Commissioner Week at Philmont Training Center (PTC), June 5–11, 2022. There are eight conferences open to all commissioners and one conference that is open to National Territory Commissioners and National Territory Commissioners elect.

Weekend Impact Sessions are in-person, topical development events. We will resume these in March 2022:

Recruiting and Engaging Commissioners
March 18–20, 2022
Hosted by the Middle Tennessee Council, Nashville, TN

Registration will open in February 2022

Virtual Impact Sessions are live, online sessions that are offered at least eight times each year.

However you’re able to take advantage of training opportunities, make the commitment to improve your skills as a commissioner and then have the consistency to see it through. You will be better equipped to do your part to sustain Scouting.
