Part-time Ranger
Position Overview
This is a part-time position requiring 20 hours of work per week.
As a Council employee, the Ranger reports to the Properties Superintendent or another professional designated by the Scout Executive for supervising, operating, and maintaining physical facilities and property in the camp area where he or she is assigned. The Ranger lives on camp property in housing provided by the Council. Additionally, the Ranger assists the camp director with matters related to resident camp operations.
Responsibilities
Protection Of Property And People
- Protect and control all use of property in accordance with Council procedures
- Patrol property as necessary for trespassers, vandalism, and fire.
- Ensure safe operating conditions and know the emergency procedures for the camp
- Participate in the development and management of the year-round budget for the camp.
- Ensure compliance with applicable BSA standards, and local, state and federal regulations
- Be professional in appearance, demeanor, and practices, while living in accordance with the Scout Oath and Law.
Business Responsibilities
- Comply with established council business procedures, including accounting for petty cash and other funds, and the year-round operation of the camp trading post.
- Submit regular reports and maintain required business records
- Maintain an inventory of all Council property, including buildings, equipment, vehicles, and tools
- Maintain and submit an inventory of personal tools.
- Exercise stewardship over assets assigned.
Operation of physical facilities and property
- Keeps all physical property and mechanical equipment (council and personnel) in safe and proper operating condition.
- Maintain safe conditions as they relate to health, safety, sanitation, and good housekeeping.
- Act as the on-site council representative in dealing with contractors. Serve as an advisor to the properties committee.
- Supervise maintenance employees when assigned.
- Receive and account for deliveries and ensure proper storage.
Maintenance of Physical Facilities and Property
- Help prepare, implement, and maintain the annual maintenance plan.
- Establish work schedules and procedures for routine maintenance and obtain necessary supplies for work crews.
- Make regular inspections to determine essential repairs and corrective actions required.
- Submit estimates of time and materials when necessary.
- Perform authorized repairs.
- Maintain accurate records.
- Maintain current as-built drawings of camp facilities and systems.
- participates in all on-site inspections and visitations.
- oversee the implementation of forestry stewardship and wildlife plans.
- Maintain all camp motor vehicles
- Maintain good housekeeping practice throughout the camp.
- Maintain the rangers’ residence and maintenance area in an orderly manner.
Relationships
- Be a contributing member of the summer camp staff. Maintain a strong, positive working relationship with the reservation director.
- Serve as staff advisor for the volunteer support group for the camp.
- Develop, maintain, and supervise a Campmaster corps..
- Maintain a good relationship with local officials, local landowners, associations, other BSA camps, and the community at large. be a visible member of the community.
- Represent the council to visitors, scouters, scouts, and parents.
Program
- Actively participate in the planning and implementation of the year-round program.
- Obtain and maintain appropriate certificates to support the year-round program.
- Assist in the marketing of camp to units, districts, and families.
- Wear the scout uniform in accordance with the uniform policy of the council and summer camp staff (while summer camp is in session).
- Seek opportunities to promote the camp to scouting groups, non-scouting groups, philanthropic organizations, and community groups.
- Assist in generating off-season revenue for the camp.
- Assist with the training of Campmaster and support groups regarding year-round trading post operation.
Competencies
- Experience in the supervision of others.
- A general knowledge of construction and related practices and procedures.
- Have a driver’s license and a good driving record.
- Obtain and maintain a water operations certification for a non-transient/non-community system
- Register with the BSA and maintain membership
- Establish residency in housing provided by the council.
- Ability to use a personal computer to communicate via email, search for information, and create and store data files.
Education
- High school diploma
Qualifications
- Ability to develop a plan for personal time and a schedule for working hours.
- Ability to relate to the scouting family and public.
- A general knowledge of construction and related practices and procedures.
- Be able to lift heavy material (approximately 80 pounds).
- Be able to access all areas of the camp, including boundaries over uneven terrain
- Obtain and maintain a certificate from the national camp school ranger section
- Obtain and maintain the required certification for first aid and CPR/AED.
- Exercise financial responsibility and personal integrity.
- Have a driver’s license and a good driving record.
- Obtain and maintain a water operations certification for a non-transient/non-community system
- Register with the BSA and maintain membership
- Establish residency in housing provided by the council.
- Ability to use a personal computer to communicate via email, search for information, and create and store data files.
Benefits
This is a part-time position, and therefore, it does not offer any benefits.
Salary or Salary Range: The pay is $25.00 per hour for a total of 20 hours of work each week.
