Position Overview

Several thousand professional Scouters lead, guide and facilitate the efforts of more than a million adult volunteers on whom Scouting depends on to carry out its mission. It is the job of the professional Scouter to inspire, recruit, train, have fun, and support the BSA’s volunteers, in addition to working with community leaders and rallying public support for Scouting’s activities.

Today’s professional Scouters are a diverse group of men and women sharing a dynamic career offering independence, achievement, and stability. Responsibilities

The professional Scouter is assigned to a district or service area within a local council (or metro area). Your district or service area is sustained and successful through your ability to promote, supervise and work with local volunteers.

  • Work with a volunteer board of directors and other community and business leaders to identify, recruit, train, guide, and inspire them to become involved in youth programs.
  • Be responsible for extending programs to community-based organizations through volunteers.
  • Secure adequate financial support for programs in assigned area.
  • Achieve net income and participation objectives for assigned camps and activities.
  • Ensure that all program sites are served through volunteers, regular leader meetings, training events and activities.
  • Be a good role model and recognize the importance of working relationships with other professionals and volunteers.
  • Provide quality service through timely communication, regular meetings, training events and activities.
  • Have a willingness and ability to devote long and irregular hours to achieve council and district objectives

Desired Skills:

  • Must be comfortable with public speaking and interacting with diverse audiences.
  • Self-motivated individual with solid time management skills and strong organizational skills
  • Committed to personal and professional productivity, while maintaining high ethical and professional working standards
  • Non-profit, fundraising, sales or marketing experience is a plus.

Requirements

  • People-oriented, having the ability to work well with adult volunteers, community and business leaders and representatives of other organizations.
  • Able to work varied hours when necessary to achieve positive objectives.
  • Believe in the BSA and subscribe to its principles and standards.
Education

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university ( a combination of work experience and education may also be an option)

Benefits

We offer several practical benefits for professional staff. In fact, the BSA offers a benefits package considered to be among the best in the nonprofit sector. The package includes major medical, dental, vision, and prescription coverage in addition to long-term disability, accident, life insurance, and a retirement plan. The starting salary is $40,000 annually. We also offer thirteen holidays and a generous vacation package. In addition, District Executives are provided a laptop, phone stipend, Scout uniform and mileage reimbursement.
