Position Overview

The Mount Baker Council (MBC) is one of the top performing Councils in the Country. MBC is in a strong financial position with a consistent budget surplus and a healthy endowment.

The Special Events Director (Associate Development Director) provides management-level leadership and is accountable for the performance and success of fundraising events and strategies to meet revenue goals. Under the direction of the Director of Development this position will primarily manage development and implementation of council-wide fundraising events, such as: Auction, Popcorn Sale, Eagle Banquets, Hike-a-thon, Pull-for-Scouting (and other field sports events), along with others as strategically developed and assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and execute fundraising events to include the recruitment and management of volunteer committees; cultivation and solicitation of sponsors; oversight of promotion and marketing activities; and all event logistics.
  • Responsible for achieving revenue targets and expense budgets for all with direct accountability for goals set forth in the annual budget.
  • Recruit and train high impact volunteers who will assist the organization in increasing awareness and engagement as well as growing revenue.
  • Prepare reports and provide information as requested and required; develop and oversee project budgets and maintain financial records for events.
  • Actively participate in the development team to ensure effective integration of strategic directions into development work plan.
  • Work with the Director of Development and other staff to manage the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship process for event and non-event donors and prospects.
  • With the Director of Development, and other team members, provide leadership in developing the fundraising program to ensure a diverse revenue stream along with “trying and testing” new events as appropriate to secure overall funding objectives.
  • Ensure all fundraising activities meet the highest ethical standards.
  • Assist with the maintenance of accurate donor database information.
  • Assure compliance with applicable fundraising and regulatory requirements.
  • Review and monitor revenue accounting and reporting systems in a timely manner.
  • Work collaboratively with and in support of volunteers, other development and advancement staff, and other colleagues to cultivate and solicit donors for organizational priorities.
  • Identify and solicit new corporate partners for events.
  • Provide direction to social media, publicity, and other marketing avenues to promote events.
  • Must be a highly energetic fundraising professional with a track record of successfully directing special events and building donor relationships.
  • Other duties as assigned.

OTHER RELATED ACTIVITIES (Special Responsibilities): 

  • Be active in visiting key event sponsors and prospects for targeted events.
  • Participate in all aspects of the gift cycle:
    • Initiate contacts with potential honorees, sponsors, and contributors.
    • Develop appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with volunteers.
    • Move potential contributors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure.
    • Make solicitations personally and with volunteers as appropriate.
  • Competency in software programs as needed and required such as Blackbaud, Black Pug, Excel, MaxGiving, and Mobile Cause/ Give Smart.
Education

Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

Qualifications
  • Three to five years successful experience in special event fundraising.
  • Interest in and commitment to the mission of the Boy Scouts of America, its impact and role of volunteers.
  • Demonstrated leadership and the ability to successfully manage events and volunteer committees.
  • Successful experience in making “cold and warm” calls as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Experience and success with corporate sponsorships and proposals.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record of completing assignments.
  • Must be willing to travel within the council’s service and influence area.
  • Experience with online fundraising is helpful.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Self-starter and goal oriented; ability to work collaboratively and creatively with others.
