SCOUTING U WELCOMES A NEW DIRECTOR

Scouting U is happy to announce that Wendy Kurten has been named as the new Director for Scouting U and Meeting Management – Boy Scouts of America (BSA).

Wendy is a visionary leader with a profound commitment to the principles of Scouting.  Her extensive journey within the Scouting community has been marked by transformative roles, strategic leadership, and an unwavering dedication to the development of both individuals and the Scouting movement.

Previously serving as the Director of Council Services, Wendy played a pivotal role in aligning and deploying resources to local BSA councils. Her leadership guided efforts and activities in support of the BSA and councils’ long-term organizational plans, showcasing her ability to navigate complex organizational landscapes.

In her capacity as Relationships Director, Wendy oversaw the BSA’s critical relationships with its national charter organizations, exemplifying her strategic vision and interpersonal skills. Prior to this, she served as the Manager of Membership Growth, where she was responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing membership growth initiatives in collaboration with local councils. Wendy’s multifaceted experience, including service in two local councils before joining the BSA’s National Service Center, provides her with a holistic understanding of the organization.

Wendy’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus in Youth Organizational Development from the University of Texas in Arlington. Her academic foundation, coupled with her practical experience, positions her as a leader capable of bridging theory and application in the dynamic world of Scouting.

She began her career with the BSA in September 2000 at the Circle Ten Council in Dallas, TX, where she laid the groundwork for her extensive and impactful tenure within the organization. Wendy’s Scouting journey, however, began even earlier, as she joined the Girl Scouts in 1983 as a first grader in Sweetwater, TX. Remaining an active member through twelfth grade, Wendy’s dedication culminated in the attainment of her Girl Scout Gold Award, a testament to her commitment to excellence.

Beyond her official roles, Wendy’s personal connection to Scouting is evident in her family life. Married to Shawn, a former Assistant Scoutmaster, Wendy is the proud mother of an Eagle Scout son, Garrett. Together, they shared the unique experience of completing their Brotherhood in the Order of the Arrow. Wendy also serves as a Scoutmaster for her daughter Harper’s troop, fostering a family tradition of Scouting involvement. She has also served on staff at several National Scout Jamborees, a World Jamboree and multiple Wood Badge trainings.

As the Director of Scouting University and Meeting Management, Wendy brings a wealth of experience, strategic insight, and a deep-rooted passion for Scouting, ensuring the continued growth and success of the Boy Scouts of America.

WHAT'S NEW AT SCOUTING U?

UMBRELLA MOVIE LICENSING FOR COUNCIL EVENTS AND TRAINING

The Umbrella Movie License eliminates the liability exposure for the Local Council and the National Service Center concerning the presentation of movies or movie clips in connection with council facilities and events, such as camps, camporees, unit movie night, OA events, Wood Badge courses, NYLT courses, or any other activity where a movie is part of the program.

Since 2016, the fees to cover the cost of the umbrella license have been incorporated into the budgets of council Wood Badge and NYLT courses. However, the license can be used by the local councils for many other purposes.  Beginning in 2024, local councils will pay a flat fee, based on council size, and will be invoiced by the National Office.  Once the fee is paid, Scouting U will issue a copy of the yearly license to the local council.

FAQ

How do I know if a particular movie is covered under the license? Once you pay the appropriate fees, you will receive a copy of the license and instructions on how to check movie titles. Wood Badge and NYLT movie clips, that are written into the syllabi, are already cleared.

What is a “Public Performance”? How many times have you seen the FBI warning at the beginning of a movie? Next time you pop a DVD into the player, read it closely. It states that the movie is for “Home Use Only.”  “Home Use” means just that, viewing of a movie at home by family or a close circle of friends.

What does the law say? Under the Copyright Revision Act of 1976 all non-private exhibitors of registered copyrighted videos or DVD’s must obtain a Public Performance License.  “Willful” infringement for commercial or financial gain is a federal crime carrying a maximum sentence of up to five years in jail and/or a $250,000 fine.

If I don’t charge admission, do I still need a license? Yes. Copyright laws apply whether or not admission is charged.

If I own the movie, do I still need a license to show it outside of my home? Yes. Neither the rental, purchase, or lending of a video or DVD carries with it the right to exhibit movies outside the home.

What if we are a non-profit organization, church, or government agency? Do we still need a license?  Yes. Copyright laws apply to all viewings of movies that take place outside of the privacy of a home, regardless of   the organization holding the event.

Who manages the Umbrella Movie License process for the National Office? Scouting U is responsible for the movie license process. Contact Kathy Craig at kathy.craig@scouting.org  with any questions.

 Powder Horn Update

The Powder Horn syllabus is currently undergoing a review to ensure it aligns with the current NCAP and Health and Safety standards. If your council has plans to conduct a Powder Horn course in 2024 and you have not already communicated this information to Scouting U, please contact Kathy Craig at kathy.craig@scouting.org.

Additionally, Scouting U is not accepting Powder Horn applications for 2025.

Strategic Training Plan Curriculum Update

A team has been assembled to update the Strategic Training Plan curriculum to be ready for a debut during Scouting U Week at Philmont, July 21 – 27, 2024. Task Force Chair, Danielle Ballantine from the National Capital Area Council, shares that “feedback by participants from the current course revealed that although they learned the strategic planning skills to create training plans, the follow through of creating and implementing a training plan in their home council did not always occur.” The team is re-writing the curriculum with a top goal of helping to ensure the participants not only learn the skills to create a strategic training plan that is relevant to them (as a district or council training chair for example) and their Council, but also how to obtain buy-in and approval from the other stakeholders in their council. The team is also working to develop a curriculum that best meets the training needs of the new generation of scouting leaders.

It is important to note that the Strategic Training Plan curriculum has not been considered a part of the T-cubed train the trainer series, but is a standalone administrative training course under supplement adult training. The team is following the ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate) method of instructional design.  Hope to see you at Philmont!

** This is an update from an article in the previous Training Times.

UPDATE TO FUNDAMENTALS OF TRAINING/TRAINERS EDGE

A Task Force Team chaired by Cathy McCarty, Voyageur Council, is taking a look at the Fundamentals of Training and Trainers EDGE curriculum with the goal of bringing it up to date and relevant for today’s trainers.

Fundamentals of Training is designed to help Scouts and Scouters, regardless of their experience, present effective training by introducing teaching techniques and skills. Upon completion, trainers are coached and mentored by experienced trainers as they become comfortable with and confident in their training skills.

As trainers develop their skills, Trainer’s EDGE provides an additional opportunity for trainers to enhance their abilities. It supplements the training development sessions offered during faculty development for advanced leadership courses and increased familiarity with the EDGE model that is used throughout the training. BOTH courses will be updated with the latest training methods and techniques.

These two updated courses will be piloted at Scouting U Week at Philmont, July 21 – 27, 2024.

The outstanding CDC faculty and participants will continue to deliver quality leadership courses in their councils in the upcoming year. Keep your eye on https://www.scouting.org/training/conferences/ for the 2024 CDC schedule. We are adding more CDCs all the time.
