Scouting for Clean Waterways

A Conservation Good Turn for America

In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Conservation Good Turn for America, Scouting America is joining the nationwide initiative aimed at addressing the critical issue of waterway and marine debris, “aquatic trash”, offering Scouts the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the health of our waterways and ecosystems.

This national effort mobilizes Scouts from across the nation into their communities in order to responsibly clean up trash that would eventually wind up in our waterways. This program is designed for Scouts of all ages and programs to make their impact on their local shorelines, rivers, parks, and playgrounds to name a few.

Scouting America invites corporate partners to demonstrate their commitment to environmental stewardship through marine based education, youth-led community action, and making measurable impacts on preserving local ecosystems for future generations.

Why it Matters:

As tenants of both the Scout Law and the Outdoor Code, Scouts are well versed in the importance of being clean in their outdoor manners – and being leaders in preserving and protecting our outdoor communities.

Connecting Scouts to the Outdoors

Through grassroot community efforts, Scouting for Clean Waterways invites Scouts to spend time in and make a positive impact on their local marine ecosystems

Educating Youth

The program gives Scouts the opportunity to discover how marine debris contribute to the endangerment of marine life, the disruption of habitats, and subsequent economic costs

Building Community Connections

Scouts work with local governments, businesses, parks, and other community groups to leave a positive difference in their communities, fostering meaningful relationships and showcasing Scouting’s community impact

Responsible Production & Consumption

Building an understanding of the risks our marine sanctuaries face, Scouts are empowered to make conservation-driven decisions in their consumption and waste habits

Fostering a Culture Service

Scouting for Clean Waterways is an excellent example of how Scouts can apply their skills and values to make a real difference in their communities

For the most part, plastic is good. It’s the human-made material in may useful things, such as water bottles, sports safety gear and food packaging.

However, about 12 billion pounds of plastic are dumped into oceans each year. Millions more are dumped into rivers, lakes, streams, swamps and other waterways.
