Snapshot of Activity

Cub Scouts attempt each of the following yo-yo tricks: the gravity pull, the sleeper, and the breakaway.

  • 1 yo-yo per Cub Scout 
  • Smart device for watching the activity video 

Before the meeting: 

  1. Gather supplies. 
  2. Use the tutorial video on the Yo-Yo Preview Adventure website  and the video How to be a Yo-Yo Ninja: Getting Started, (1:36 minutes) 
  3. Familiarize yourself with yo-yo tricks by watching this YouTube video, “How to be a Yo-Yo Ninja: Classic Tricks Pt 1.” (1:58 minutes). 
  4. Set up meeting space with room for Cub Scouts to use their yo-yo. 

During the meeting: 

  1. Have each Cub Scout stand in the middle of the circle made during the Yo-Yo Be Safe activity and with the yo-yo properly attached to their middle finger. 
  2. Have the Cub Scouts wind the yo-yo properly. 
  3. Make sure that the string is coming from over the top of the yo-yo when it is completely wound and still in the hand. 
  4. Demonstrate the gravity pull trick to the Cub Scouts. 
  5. Have Cub Scouts attempt the gravity pull trick while in their circle. 
  6. Demonstrate the sleeper trick to the Cub Scouts. 
  7. Have Cub Scouts attempt the sleeper trick while in their circle. 
  8. Demonstrate the breakaway trick to the Cub Scouts. 
  9. Have Cub Scouts attempt the breakaway trick while in their circle. 
  10. Have the Cub Scouts practice each trick. 
  11. Have the Cub Scouts demonstrate the three tricks. 

Tip: Remember that the motto for Cub Scouts is: Do Your Best. The requirement is to attempt the yo-yo trick not become proficient.
