  • Scouting America Annual Health and Medical Record on each participant (youth and adult)
  • Timer, one for every two Cub Scouts
  • Orange safety cone
  • Projections Recording Sheet from requirement 1
  • 8 ½” x 11” paper, one for each Cub Scout
  • Pencils, one for each Cub Scout
  • Rubber bands, number of rubber bands per lap * number of Cub Scouts

Before the meeting:

  1. Determine how long 2 miles for the track. Tracks do vary based on size. Most standard tracks are 400 meters. One mile is equal to 1,609 meters. About one lap would be ¼ mile. In this case, 8 laps would be 2 miles.
  2. Calculate the number of rubber bands needed to complete the 2 miles.
  3. Contact parents and legal guardians to let them know Cub Scouts must wear comfortable clothes, close toe shoes, and bring their Cub Scout Six Essentials. Remind them of the meeting location date and time.
  4. Gather copies of the Scouting America Annual Health and Medical Record on each participant (youth and adult)
  5. Review Annual Health and Medical Records for any restrictions that may impact participation

During the meeting:

  1. Bring copies of the Scouting America Annual Health and Medical Record on each participant (youth and adult)
  2. Review the Projected Time the Cub Scouts completed in requirement 1. Explain that today Cub Scouts are going to see how close our estimate was to the actual time.
  3. Show Cub Scouts what 2 miles looks like on the indoor created track.
  4. Walkers will keep track of their laps. Explain to Cub Scouts that each time they complete a lap, an adult or the den chief will place a rubber band on their wrist. When they have “x” number of rubber bands, they will have completed 2 miles.
  5. Assign an adult or a den chief person to be the timekeeper.
  6. Walk the 2 miles. Remind Cub Scouts, that this is not a race, they are walking to get a pace to see if our prediction from requirement 1. is correct. Adding any Cub Scout Pizzazz is encouraged: walking music, theme, celebration during each lap, singing songs during walking (Songbook), etc.
  7. Record the time it took Cub Scouts to walk 2 miles. Save this information, the Cub Scout will need it for requirement 3.
