Before the meeting:

  1. Find a trail. If combining the entire Math on the Trail Requirements together in one meeting, find a trail that is about 2 miles long.
  2. Determine the path of a 2-mile path for the on the trail. Remember you can always find a one-mile trail in and a one-mile hike back. Mark the route on the map or hiking app. Assign an adult or den chief to monitor the map or hiking app to notify when the group reaches 2 miles.
  3. Contact parents and legal guardians to let them know Cub Scouts must wear comfortable clothes, close toe shoes, and bring their Cub Scout Six Essentials. Remind them of the meeting location date and time.
  4. Gather copies of the Scouting America Annual Health and Medical Record on each participant (youth and adult)
  5. Review Annual Health and Medical Records for any restrictions that may impact participation

During the meeting:

  1. Bring copies of the Scouting America Annual Health and Medical Record on each participant (youth and adult)
  2. Review the Projected Time the Cub Scouts completed in requirement 1. Explain that today Cub Scouts are going to see how close our estimate was to the actual time.
  3. Show Cub Scouts what 2 miles looks like on the map of the trail.
  4. Walk the 2 miles. Remind Cub Scouts, that this is not a race, they are walking to get a pace to see if our prediction from requirement 1. is correct.
  5. Record the time it took Cub Scouts to walk 2 miles. Save this information, the Cub Scout will need it for requirement 3.
