  2. Contact parents and legal guardians to let them know Cub Scouts must wear comfortable clothes, close toe shoes, and their Cub Scout Six Essentials. Remind them of the meeting location date and time.
  3. Gather copies of the Scouting America Annual Health and Medical Record on each participant (youth and adult).
  4. Review Annual Health and Medical Records for any restrictions that may impact participation.
  5. Set up a place where Cub Scouts can safely use a hammer and chisel on their rocks.

During the meeting:

  1. Bring copies of the Scouting America Annual Health and Medical Record on each participant (youth and adult)
  2. Explain to Cub Scouts that they are searching for rocks that they will break apart and examine. Ask them to find at least two different rocks. They are to put their rocks into their bag.
  3. Allow Cub Scouts time to find their two rocks.
  4. Gather at the designated place to break open the rocks. Pass out safety glasses and ask them to put them on.
  5. Distribute rags. Tell Cub Scouts to wrap their rocks in the rag before breaking apart the rocks with a hammer and chisel.
  6. Have Cub Scouts break open their rocks and then use a magnifying glass to study the rock.
  7. Have the Cub Scouts share what they found.
