  • Geode for each Cub Scout and one for yourself
  • Safety glasses, one for each Cub Scout
  • Rocks
  • Geology hammer, enough to share
  • Old sock, one for each Cub Scout and geode
  • Magnifying glass, one for each Cub Scout

Before the meeting:

  1. Purchase geodes online or at a local rock store.
  2. Practice opening a geode by placing it in a sock and lightly tapping.
  3. Set up a place where Cub Scouts can safely use a hammer and chisel on their geode.

During the meeting:

  1. Explain to Cub Scouts that they will be breaking apart a special type of rock called a geode. Geodes are spherical rocks that contain hollow cavities lined with crystals .
  2. Pass out safety glasses and ask them to put them on.
  3. Share your open geode and demonstrate how you opened it using a sock.
  4. Have Cub Scouts place their geode in a sock and hit it very lightly with a hammer.
  5. Have Cub Scouts then use a magnifying glass to study the geode.
  6. Have the Cub Scouts share what they found.
