Before the meeting:

  1. Contact the Department of Natural Resources for your state and ask if a Wildlife Officer, Game Warden, Conservation Officer, Fish and Game Warden, Wildlife Enforcement Agent, or Ranger would be willing to visit your den meeting to talk about local fish and their habitats.  Give them the date and location of your den meeting.
  2. Explain that the den is made up of fifth graders and they are learning about fishing and local aquatic ecosystems.  Ask them to bring any supplies they will need.

During the meeting:

  1. Welcome the visiting guest presenter.
  2. Explain to Cub Scouts what they will be doing during the meeting.
  3. Encourage Cub Scouts to ask questions.  Remind them to be respectful during the presentation.
  4. Ask the guest presenter to discuss the following:
    • The types of local aquatic ecosystems/habitats.
    • Types of fish that can be caught locally.
    • Any local fishing guidelines and regulations.
    • The importance of conservation.
    • Any fishing tips?
  5. When they’re finished, have Cub Scouts ask questions such as:
    • How did you learn to fish?
    • How big was the biggest fish you have caught?
    • What is your favorite fish?
    • What bait do you like to use?
    • What tackle do you use?
    • What tackle would you recommend for someone learning how to fish?

 After the meeting:

  1. Write a thank you note to the guest presenter and send it.
