Before the meeting:

  1. Familiarize yourself with 3D art by viewing this YouTube video, Easy Art for Kids: Wire and Bead Sculptures. (duration 3 minutes)
  2. Gather supplies.
  3. Cut 2” x 4” board into 4” x 4” small blocks.
  4. Set up meeting space with supplies on a covered table. Set out cups of water for brushes.
  5. Fill wash basis with water for washing tools and hands.

During the meeting:

  1. Share with Cub Scouts that art can be 3 dimensional. Paintings and photos are 2 dimensional, sculptures are 3 dimensional. Today they will be making 3 dimensional, or 3D art.
  2. Have Cub Scouts write their name on the bottom of the block of wood with the permanent marker.
  3. Have Cub Scouts select and paint their wooden beads. They may choose to have all the same size or various sizes.
  4. While the beads are drying, prepare the base of the sculpture by threading an 18-inch length of wire through the wooden spool creating a large loop. Do not twist the ends together yet.
  5. Using wood glue, attach the wooden spool to the center of the wood block with the wires coming out the top of the spool.
  6. Paint your wooden base with a paintbrush.
  7. Thread beads along the wire. Twist the ends of the wire together to hold them in place. Use pliers if needed.
  8. Now start bending and twisting your wire and beads into whatever shape you want. Keep playing with it until you are happy with the shape. If you like, add additional wires and beads to make a more elaborate sculpture.
  9. After cleaning up, have time for the scouts to share their sculptures and share what they like about this activity.
