Supervisor Livestock Operations
Position Overview
The Philmont Scout Ranch is seeking a Supervisor of Livestock Operations to ensure the responsible and sustainable operation of livestock programs across the ranch. This position oversees livestock, range land resources, and assigned staff while ensuring compliance with best practices, animal welfare standards, and applicable regulatory requirements. The Supervisor of Livestock Operations reports directly to the Manager of Ranching.

Responsibilities
- Supervises three or more full-time ranch employees and seasonal staff.
- Directs daily work assignments, sets priorities, and monitors progress and productivity.
- Provides performance feedback, conducts evaluations, and recommends hiring, promotion, and disciplinary actions.
- Trains staff on livestock care, safety standards, and ranch procedures.
- Oversees daily livestock care including feeding, health management, breeding cycles, and pasture rotation.
- Coordinates veterinary support, medication schedules, and animal health records.
- Manages calving, branding, weaning, and herd movement operations.
- Ensures humane treatment, safe handling practices, and compliance with all state and federal requirements.
- Oversees the fencing crew and manages the livestock and all fencing across the operation.
- Plans and manages in coordination with the Camping Headquarters department all livestock programs including cavalcades, burro packing and trail rides throughout Philmont.
- Plans and manages all aspects of pasture, range, and feed resource use.
- Oversees the safe operation of ranch vehicles, equipment, corrals, fences, water systems, and related infrastructure.
- Coordinates repairs, vendor services, and supply procurement for livestock operation.
- Manages budgets for seasonal staffing, livestock, feed, equipment, veterinary care, fuel, and operational supplies.
- Implements ranch safety procedures and ensures staff follow safe working practices.
- Helps maintain compliance with animal welfare, agricultural, environmental, and workplace regulations.
- Responds to operational emergencies, weather events, or livestock issues on a timely basis.
- Works closely with the Director of Ranching and Conservation to support long range livestock planning and operational goals.
- Assists in evaluating herd performance, pasture conditions, and resource needs.
- Supports special projects, improvements, and seasonal ranch programs.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of: Practical knowledge of animal husbandry, livestock health, handling, and day-to-day ranch operations to ensure productivity and animal welfare. Strong knowledge of livestock health, behavior, nutrition, and facility maintenance.
- Skill in: Managing rangeland, pastures, equipment, and infrastructure responsibly to support sustainability and long-term operational success; planning, prioritizing, and coordinating ranch activities; managing labor, time, and resources efficiently; adapting plans to changing conditions.
- Ability to: Promotes a strong safety culture; identifies and mitigates risks; ensures compliance with safety, livestock, and environmental regulations. Assesses situations quickly; makes sound, timely decisions; responds effectively to emergencies and operational challenges. Lead, train, and motivate ranch staff; assign work effectively; ensure accountability, teamwork, and safe work practices. Communicates clearly with staff and management; maintains accurate records; demonstrates integrity and professionalism in all interactions. Ability to plan, organize, and make independent decisions in demanding conditions. Proven ability to supervise staff and manage daily work operations.
Education
High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
Qualifications
- Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in agriculture, or a related field, including leading and managing personnel and experience managing livestock operations at a ranch, farm, or large agricultural property.
- Must pass a criminal history background check.
