  • Pencil, one for each Cub Scout
  • Water cup, one for each Cub Scout
  • Plastic tablecloth
  • Paint shirt for each Cub Scout
  • Water

Before the meeting:

  1. Familiarize yourself with watercolor painting by viewing this YouTube video, How To Paint With Watercolor (for kids.) (duration 16 minutes)
  2. Gather supplies.
  3. Set up meeting space with brushes, sponges, watercolor paint, and water cups on a covered table.
  4. Fill wash basis with water for washing tools and hands.

During the meeting:

  1. Share with Cub Scouts that they will be painting with watercolors. To use watercolor, you dab it with a wet brush. Watercolor paint won’t hide a color you’ve already painted, but it lets the white of the paper show through, adding light to the color.
  2. Demonstrate how watercolors can blend into one another.
  3. Tell Cub Scouts that they will be painting a leaf. Point out that the leaf has a variety of colors.
  4. Allow time for painting.
  5. Have Scouts sign and date their artwork.
  6. Once Cub Scouts are done painting, have them clean their hands.
  7. After cleaning up, have time for Cub Scouts to look at each other’s artwork.
