  • Digital camara or smart device camera for each Cub Scout
  • An apple, orange, bunch of grapes, and a banana
  • White tablecloth
  • A small table

Before the meeting:

  1. Send a notice to parents and legal guardians for their Cub Scout to bring a digital camera or a smart device to the den meeting. For those who do not have one identify a source to borrow from.
  2. Set out the apple, orange, grapes, and banana on a table covered by the white tablecloth.

During the meeting:

  1. Explain to the Cub Scouts that they will be taking a picture of the fruit and then use the features on their camera to edit the photo. Explain to them that most photographers take a number of pictures and then edit the photo to make the best picture.
  2. Have Cub Scouts take a picture of each piece of fruit. Once with the flash off and again with the flash on.
  3. Stop and examine the pictures. What differences do they see?
  4. Next, take pictures zooming in on the fruit, and then another picture zooming out. Let them take a variety of pictures zooming in close and zooming way out.
  5. Examine the pictures. Which do they like best? What can they see when zooming in that is not seen when zooming out?
  6. Using the pictures that they have taken, have the Cub Scouts select 1 of the photos. Make 3 copies of the photo.
    • In one copy of the photo, use the edit feature to make changes to the photo.
    • In a second copy of the photo, use the crop feature. For Use the edit feature in the camera
    • In the third copy, use the brightness feature to make an edit.
  7. Compare the 3 edited photos to the original. How are they difference? Any similaries? Which photo makes the fruit look the best?

Tip: This activity works well when each Cub Scout works with their parent or legal guardian.
