Directions

Before the meeting:

Gather $5-10 in pennies.
Place the pennies in a jar.
Learn about mint marks on coins and the different locations where coins are made.
1. P = Philadelphia
2. S = San Francisco
3. D = Denver
4. W = West Point

During the meeting:

Gather Cub Scouts and inform them that in the United States coins are made in four different places called mints.
Use the large image to show them what a mint mark looks like on a coin.
Ask each Cub Scout to find the mint mark on a penny.
Dump the pennies into a pile where all Cub Scouts can reach the pile. Tell them they have 5 minutes to find the oldest penny from each mint. Start the 5-minute timer.
After the 5 minutes are up, have Cub Scouts share the oldest penny they found and ask what mint it is from. See who found the oldest penny from each mint.
