  • 1 Jar
  • $ 5-10 dollars of pennies
  • Print out of the face of a penny

Before the meeting:

  1. Gather $5-10 in pennies.
  2. Place the pennies in a jar.
  3. Learn about mint marks on coins and the different locations where coins are made.
    1. P = Philadelphia
    2. S = San Francisco
    3. D = Denver
    4. W = West Point

 

During  the meeting:

  1. Gather Cub Scouts and inform them that in the United States coins are made in four different places called mints.
  2. Use the large image to show them what a mint mark looks like on a coin.
  3. Ask each Cub Scout to find the mint mark on a penny.
  4. Dump the pennies into a pile where all Cub Scouts can reach the pile. Tell them they have 5 minutes to find the oldest penny from each mint. Start the 5-minute timer.
  5. After the 5 minutes are up, have Cub Scouts share the oldest penny they found and ask what mint it is from.  See who found the oldest penny from each mint.

 

After the meeting

  1. Put all the pennies back into the jar,
