Cub Scouts learn about the bowline knot and compete to tie one the fastest

  • 15’ piece of rope for every two Cub Scouts
  • Webelos handbook or Bowline Knot worksheet found in Additional Resources

Before the meeting:

  1. Familiarize yourself with the bowline knot by watching this video on Scout Life, “How to Tie a Bowline Knot.”
  2. Remind Cub Scouts to bring their handbook.
  3. Tie a bowline and keep it as an example.

During the meeting:

  1. Have Cub Scouts watch while you demonstrate how to tie the knot.
  2. Tell Cub Scouts to follow along with each step while you demonstrate again.
  3. Ask Cub Scouts to tie the knot by themselves using the diagrams in their Webelos handbook or the worksheet.
  4. Ask Cub Scouts to buddy up and give each pair a 15’ piece of rope.
  5. Have each pair of Cub Scouts stand facing each other.
  6. Tell Cub Scouts to hold one end of the rope in their right hand raised above their head.
  7. At the word “Go,” each Cub Scout races to tie a bowline around their waist.
  8. When both Cub Scouts in a pair have tied the knot, they must carefully lean backward with their full weight to test the knots.
  9. The first pair who correctly ties the knot wins.
