Livin Health Initiative
Our Scouting program is based upon the important principles embodied within the Scout Oath and Law. Part of that Oath is the statement: “To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake…” There is no one, path to physical and mental health and fitness as we are all individuals but each must “Do your best.” Today is the first day of the rest of your life so no matter your prior health and physical activity you can move forward and upward. Ponder: How do you eat an elephant? Answer: One bite at a time. The same is true for health and fitness. The time to start is now and this is the reason that the BSA has created this new healthy living initiative. A world class marathon champion once told me “I started running by putting one foot in front of the other, it was that simple!”
Many medical studies have demonstrated that the individual who exercises and eats healthy will live longer, be more energetic and maintain their cognitive and memory function. We also know that many degenerative diseases, such as arteriosclerosis, begins during the teen years and early adulthood. It is never too early or too late to start a healthy lifestyle, to create your own personal environment for later success. Whatever program you prefer, walking, swimming, running, yoga, gymnastics, basic gym exercise, any sporting activity will be helpful. Also, learn about food nutrition and healthy eating. The important point is to start moving now, first away from the table and second to put your body in motion.
This BSA program is for all our members, beginning with youth but also including our adult leaders who should set an example. Take a look at the sources of helpful information within this BSA website.
