For youth who are members of a BSA program

For BSA members, earning the award consists of three elements:

  • Rank and prerequisites: You must be a Star Scout, between the ages of 14 and 18, who has completed the Citizenship in the Nation merit badge and two of the following merit badges: Swimming, Personal Fitness, or Lifesaving. Or you must be a Venturer, between the ages of 14 and 21, who has completed half of the requirements for the Outdoor OR Sea Scout Venturing Bronze Award.
  • Preparation: You must prepare individually or with a group of Scouts, using the online resources provided by the Navy SEAL/SWCC Scout Team. You are strongly encouraged to record your activities on an activity log, downloadable from the SCOUTStrong PALA Challenge website.
  • Assessments: Each participant must pass the Navy SEAL online assessment and meet the minimum requirements of the Navy SEAL Physical Screening Test (PST). First, contact your unit leader or council office to see if fees apply. To pass the minimum requirements of the PST, a Scout or adult Scouter must do the following in consecutive order:
    1. A 500-yard breaststroke or sidestroke in 12 minutes, 30 seconds
    2. Rest—10 minutes
    3. 50 push-ups in 2 minutes
    4. Rest—2 minutes
    5. 50 sit-ups in 2 minutes
    6. Rest—2 minutes
    7. 10 dead-hang pull-ups in 2 minutes
    8. Rest—10 minutes
    9. A 1.5-mile run in 10 minutes, 30 seconds

Scouts and adult Scouters who successfully complete ALL of the requirements will receive a proof of completion certificate and a SCOUTStrong Navy SEAL Fitness Award patch.
