What is Scouts BSA Month at Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s?
The month of September presents recruitment and popcorn sale opportunities for Scouting units and local councils, merit badge classes for youth, and opportunities to inform your community about Scouting and getting outdoors. As each store is unique and will have a different relationship with a local council, activities can vary.
Who may participate in Scouts BSA month?
While the merit badge classes are open to youth members of the Boy Scouts of America 11-17, there are opportunities for everyone who loves Scouting and the outdoors to join in with various in-store activities. Units and councils can work with local stores to set up informational tables for all programs, coordinate popcorn sales (or other items except for camp cards), and other creative engagement events determined by the store and local council.
Are engagement opportunities with local stores only available in September?
Councils should contact the local store and discuss creative ways throughout the year to connect young people and families to Scouting and getting outdoors. In the past, councils have coordinated BSA Fun Days, in-store demonstrations and other engaging events. But it all starts with connecting to your local store.
Can units sell popcorn or other fundraising items at store locations only in September?
Each store is unique and can be open to many ways to help your unit or council connect more youth and families to Scouting and getting outdoors, including fundraising in other months of the year. Contact your nearest store.
Can units/individuals sell camp cards at store locations?
While Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s stores will work with units as fundraising venues, this does not include the sale of camp cards.
Where is the Bass Pro Shops or Cabela’s store near me?
Use your zip code in the Bass Pro Shops or Cabela’s store locator.
Can you tell me more about Scouts’ presence in stores?
Any time during September (but particularly on weekends, when traffic is highest), Scouts are encouraged to be store-front to talk to customers, to sell Scouting fundraiser items such as popcorn (camp card sales are not allowed) and provide BSA membership education (youth and adults). Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s can provide tables and chairs for units or councils interested in providing coverage and will also provide in-store signage promoting Scouting.
Are there marketing materials I can use?
Yes. The online toolkit (see “For Councils and Units” section) has fliers and digital resources for anyone interested in spreading the word.
Can a local council create its own materials to distribute?
Only official promotional materials found on the online toolkit should be distributed. These materials are designed to be edited and personalized if needed. If you have a special request, please contact the BSA Office of Development at email@example.com. Any unauthorized use of Boy Scouts of America, Bass Pro Shops or Cabela’s marks is prohibited and strictly enforced.
