The outdoor program is an essential reason why families join Cub Scouts. This Pack Meeting plan is designed to be done with one meeting and an outing for all ranks. The concept of this required Adventure is to get families outside, it doesn’t have to be in the wilderness. The walk for this adventure can be done in any setting. For some, it may be a local nature trail, or it can be an urban path, or just the local neighborhood.
The Arrow of Light Scouts to prepare them for Scouts BSA are required to go on a camping trip to earn their Outdoor Adventurer, the camping trip can be done as a den or with a Scouts BSA Troop with a Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation trained leader or as part of a Pack campout or a council-organized overnight activity.
Prior to any activity, use the Scouting America SAFE Checklist to ensure the safety of all those involved.
All participants in official Scouting America activities should become familiar with the Guide to Safe Scouting and applicable program literature or manuals.
Be aware of state or local government regulations that supersede Scouting America practices, policies, and guidelines.
To assist in the safe delivery of the program you may find specific safety items that are related to requirements for the Adventure.
Before starting this Adventure complete the following:
If there is someone in the den, youth, or adults, who carries an EpiPen due to severe allergies make sure that at least one other adult knows how to administer the EpiPen. To learn more, review this Safety Moment on anaphylaxis.
Before starting this Adventure complete the following:
Before starting this Adventure, review Digital Safety and Online Scouting Activities.
FOR ARROW OF LIGHT – When camping:
When camping with a Scouting America troop, Arrow of Light scouts abide by Arrow of Light Cub Scout camping rules.
Before starting this Adventure:
The Outdoors Pack Meeting is focused on planning and taking a walk as a pack. Webelos are to be part of the planning process by helping select the location for the walk. This can be done by providing them with a couple of options and having them choose one. For Arrow of Light, it is planning and conducting a campout.
The walk should be scheduled for a date and time that works best for the families in the Pack, this may mean planning it for a date and time that is not during a regular pack meeting schedule. Ideally, the walk is during the day when all parents and family members can participate.
It is best to communicate details in a written form that is distributed to parents and legal guardians, and referred to often, as this will help ensure everyone is well informed and prepared.
ALL RANKS – Before the walk everyone should have their own Cub Scout Six Essentials and bring it with them on the walk.
ARROW OF LIGHT – Camping equipment will be needed for the campout. Make sure parents have the Individual Campout Checklist for Pack Overnighter and that their Arrow of Light Scouts have the proper gear.
Near the entrance to the meeting location, station a greeter to welcome people as they arrive and provide everyone with a name tag.
Gather everyone and review the Leave No Trace Principles for Kids by teaching the hand signals for each.
Welcome, Cub Scouts, to our outdoor-themed pack meeting. The 11th point of the Scout Law is “A Scout is clean.” We don’t just keep our bodies and minds clean – we should also work to keep our homes, communities, and nature clean. When we recite The Outdoor Code which we start by saying that we will be in our outdoor manners. Being clean in our outdoor manners means that we take care of the outdoors and keep it clean by picking up trash and not creating any trash. That we don’t markup trees or natural objects that cause permanent damage.
Our meeting will focus on preparing for our walk which will be (Day, Time, and Location). We will learn about the Cub Scout Six Essentials and how to enjoy the outdoors.
Give directions on den breakouts/den meetings.
Dens may meet individually or they may be combined to complete similar or the same requirements.
No activity stations for this meeting.
Lions, Tigers, and Wolves will likely finish their den breakouts first. As they finish start a game of Cat’s Tail.
When Bear, Webelos, and Arrow of Light finish, start a game of Number Call-Out for everyone.
No presentations at this meeting.
Scouts, at our meeting, we learned a lot about the outdoors and are now prepared for our pack walk. Remember your Cub Scout Six Essentials and all that we learned! I look forward to seeing you at our walk on (date, time, location).
It is best to communicate details in a written form that is distributed to parents and legal guardians, and referred to often, as this will help ensure everyone is well informed and prepared.
ALL SCOUTS – As people gather at your meetup location, have Lions and Tigers form buddy groups with two Cub Scouts and two adult partners. All other Cub Scouts buddy up. Review the importance of the buddy system when outdoors. Use this activity with the pack Bear Buddies Rule. Once buddy groups are formed, review the Cub Scout Six Essentials and check to make sure everyone has their six essentials.
BEARS – Have the Bear Scouts identify the location of their walk on a map and confirm their one-mile route.
Begin the walk. Always have an adult leader in front and an adult leader at the very back to help keep the group together as much as possible.
There will be three breaks along the way to complete activities. Space out the breaks along the first mile; this allows younger Scouts to stop walking after one mile and allows Webelos and Arrow of Light Scouts to continue walking to meet their requirements.
Lions, Tigers, and Wolf Scouts will finish earlier as Webelos and Arrow of Light continue their walk. Gather the Lions, Tigers, and Wolf Scouts and start a game of Red Light Green Light.
When Webelos and Arrow of Light complete their walk have them conduct a Stop, Start, Continue conversation.
Gather all Scouts together for the closing.
Use the presentation Outdoors to present Adventures. Arrow of Light Scouts will not complete the Outdoor Adventurer Adventure until they have completed the campout requirement.
Cub Scouts, as part of this adventure we learned about Leave No Trace. Like the Scout Oath and Law, we should make these a part of our daily lives:
Good job tonight, Scouts. And remember, have fun and do your best!
During an Arrow of Light Den Meeting or breakout, complete the following before the campout. A Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation trained adult leader is to guide this process with the Arrow of Light Scouts. Local Scouts BSA Troop leaders may also be used as a resource.
During the den campout, complete the following requirements. Detailed instructions are in the activity link. A Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation trained adult leader is to be present for the campout, unless the campout is a Cub Scout overnight council-organized event. Local Scouts BSA Troop leaders may also be used as a resource.
