Have you wanted to help your council or district? Do you like the outdoor programs of the BSA? OF COURSE YOU DO! (or you would not be reading this article.)
There is a good chance that your council and/or district has multiple short-term camp events throughout the year, both on and off your council camp property. These could be weekend events that occur across your district or councils, like camporees, OA events, Cub Scout weekends or even training events. Each of these events is developed by a planning committee who is aided in planning by a short-term camp administrator.
The short-term camp administrator’s role is to help the planning committee plan a safe event that meets the minimum standards outlined in the National Camp Accreditation Program for short-term camps. Most often referred to as “NCAP”, the National Camp Accreditation Program provides standards for all camps across all councils to operate safe programs for all levels of Scouting. Scouting safety is everyone’s job and the NCAP process is a powerful tool to help us! A short-term camp administrator plays a key role in improving safety.
To serve as a short-term camp administrator, you must attend National Camping School to be certified. This training is designed specifically for the unique role of a short-term camp administrator.
Trainings may be available through your council, if they are a nationally licensed host location, or you can attend an online course through a nationally coordinated course. For a full list of nationally coordinated courses visit https://www.scouting.org/outdoor-programs/camping/short-term-camp/.
