Driving Safety

The National Safety Council has designated June as National Safety Month and teamed up with Toyota to focus on driving safety. Driving is one of the most dangerous activities you will do each day. As traffic increases during the summer months, keep in mind these tips:

  • Cell phone use distracts driving.
  • Use your safety belts at all times.
  • Don’t drive impaired (including fatigue) or with aggression.

Be sure to discuss driving safety before your Scout unit heads out for an activity this summer. The BSA has a Driver’s Pledge that serves as an excellent framework for discussion and managing risk. Driving Scouts to and from events is common, which can lead us to think that the risk is not there or minimal. Use the resources from the BSA and the NSC website to look at your driving risk and how best to manage a safe event.
