Before the meeting:

  1. Identify adults in the den who are handy with tools and could assist, either by bringing additional tools or help with the den meeting.
  2. Gather the supply and safety items needed, enough for each Cub Scout.
  3. Notify parent or legal guardian to ensure that Cub Scouts wear close toe shoes.
  4. Secure additional adult supervision as needed.
  5. Purchase materials.

During the meeting:

  1. Provide each Scout with a set of tools, safety gear, and supplies from their list.

    • Using a protractor or a cooking pot as a guide, draw a half-circle on the 8-inch board. Make the shelf by carefully cutting along the line with a coping saw.
    • Draw a diagonal line on the 6-inch board. Make the brace by carefully cutting along the line with a coping saw.
    • Sand all the edges smooth.
    • Paint or stain the shelf and brace as desired.
    • Use glue and finishing nails to attach the brace to the bottom of the shelf.
    • Screw angle brackets to the bottom of the shelf at the back edge.
    • With an adult’s help, use wall fasteners to attach your shelf to the wall. (You may need hollow wall anchors to attach the shelf securely to the wall.)
