Clean Waterways

Before the meeting:

1. Review the materials for Scouting for Clean Waterways for Cub Scouts. https://www.scouting.org/outdoor-programs/scouting-clean-waterways/cubscouts/
2. Identify a local waterway to conduct the clean up.
3. Secure permission from property owners and/or local government
4. Confirm the date and time of the clean up. The project should be no longer than 2 hours.
5. Communicate the details to the parents and legal guardians of your Cub Scouts.
6. Gather copies of the Scouting America Annual Health and Medical Record on each participant (youth and adult).
7. Review Annual Health and Medical Records for any restrictions that may impact participation.

During the den meeting:

1. Bring copies of the Scouting America Annual Health and Medical Record on each participant (youth and adult).
2. Create buddies.
3. Assign area for buddies to clean up.
4. Review how to safely pick up trash and to leave sharp and heavy objects for adults.
5. Discuss the following questions with the den before you begin the clean up.
   1. What is littering? When someone litters, what do you think happens?
   2. What do you think will happen if the earth’s waterways, like oceans, lakes, rivers and streams, are filled with litter?
   3. What are some ways we could help stop littering? How can we keep litter out of the earth’s waterways?
   4. Pretend you are a fish who lives in the ocean. How could litter, like a plastic water bottle, be harmful to you?
   5. What other materials could harm the earth’s waterways?
   6. Why is it important to take care of the environment? How can you take care of the environment?
6. Conduct clean up.
7. Properly dispose of trash.

After the den meeting:

1. Log on to Scoutbook to record the service project.
2. Present Cub Scouts with certificate and/or Scouting for Clean Waterways Patch.
