Camp Ranger
Position Overview
Full-time Camp Property Ranger at Owasippe Scout Reservation, located in Twin Lake, Michigan. Position is a key member of the camping team providing on-site management and maintenance of camp facilities and properties. Position is to live on site, supervise and organize those employees and/or volunteers responsible for seasonal and year-round maintenance, health and safety, and security duties.
Responsibilities
MAINTENANCE OF FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT
Maintain and repair the facility’s structure, machinery, equipment and grounds, including plumbing, electrical, and HVAC. Items included but not limited to trucks, tractors, motorboats, pools, wells, and pump systems. Perform skilled trades work, such as carpentry or painting, construction, repair or alteration of structures such as walls, roofs or office fixtures. Perform minor tree trimming and removal, snow plowing, and grass cutting. Manage fleet of vehicles with basic knowledge of auto mechanics. Keep all physical property and equipment in operating condition and good appearance.
SECURITY, SAFETY, INSPECTION, COMPLIANCE
Protect the campgrounds by enforcing camp rules and regulations. Secure and monitor perimeters against unauthorized access, accidents, vandalism, theft, wildfire, and other concerns. Identify and report safety hazards and maintenance problems in need of repair. Be particularly alert to conditions that affect health, safety, sanitation, and good housekeeping practices. Become trained to meet all Scouting, local, state, and federal regulations. Maintain a positive relationship with local agencies and their staff in all aspects of certification and compliance related to operating a youth camp. Become trained to adhere to the Guide to Safe Scouting and BSA National Camp Standards. Participate in annual inspections/evaluations of facilities and properties.
CAMP OPERATIONS
Be a contributing member of the summer camp staff. Support the needs of camp operations for summer camp as well as year-round scouting events and outside group rentals. Maintain a strong, positive working relationship with the reservation director to deliver a high-quality experience. Support seasonal camp operations.
LEADERSHIP AND ACCOUNTABILITY
Provide leadership and supervision to part-time and seasonal rangers, camp caretakers, and volunteer laborers. Coordinate projects and supervise camp staff during projects in a project management role. Serve as a representative of the property on Council committees and on volunteer/donor committees that have a stake in the property. Recognize the importance of a good working relationship with volunteers, as well as other Professional and Support staff members. Supervise maintenance contractors as assigned.
BUSINESS ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintain a record of all maintenance actions. Submit regular reports and maintain essential business records. Follow and implement a comprehensive and proactive facilities maintenance plan. Keep expenses in line with the approved budget. Comply with established Council business procedures, including accounting for petty cash and material purchases. Be accountable for all materials, supplies, and equipment of the camp operations.
MAINTAIN HARMONIOUS RELATIONSHIPS
With the local community, governmental services officials, and neighbors. Keep a friendly and helpful attitude toward co-workers, Scouts, Scouters, and visitors. Develop and grow relationships with local vendors. Develop strong relationships with volunteers to support overall camp operations. Give timely responses to emails and telephone messages.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position will be subjected to the following conditions: both inside and outside environmental work, extreme heat and cold, hazards, atmospheric conditions, hazardous chemicals, lubricants and oils, poisonous insects, snakes and spiders, risk of slips, spills, falls, and mechanical injury. The position requires working irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends as demanded by the workload, as well as some spring and summer holidays.
Education
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required
- Advanced Trade School training is highly desirable
Qualifications
· Must be at least 21 years of age
· Physically and mentally fit
· Must establish residency in housing on camp property
· Successful completion of Safeguarding Youth Training
· Submission of a BSA Adult application (includes background check)
· Must subscribe to and live by the basic tenets embodied in the Scout Oath and Law
· Have a current, valid state driver’s license
· Ability to perform a variety of basic maintenance skills
· A general knowledge of construction and related practices and procedures
· Specialized capability in at least one technical skill is highly desirable
· Facilities management experience is preferred
· Prior Scouting experience a plus

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, SOFTWARE, DEVICES
Expected to safely know how and to teach the use of tools, machinery, equipment, and computers to complete the listed responsibilities.
Licenses
· Once hired, attend and successfully complete BSA Ranger school
· Once hired, obtain a Pool Operator’s License
· Willing and able to attend continuous training
Benefits
$50,000 – $55,000, housing and utilities included
