Job Overview:
The Development Professional is responsible for developing personal relationships with high-end philanthropic prospects and major donors with the capacity to make major leadership gifts to Scouting and to close these gifts.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Working closely with the Director of the Office of Philanthropy, the Development Professional will be responsible for developing personal relationships with high-end philanthropic prospects, Executive Board members, and supporters of Scouting nationwide, and for developing strategies to strengthen ties between these individuals and top BSA professionals and volunteers at local and/or national council levels, and help solicit and close major gifts from these individuals.
  • Use an organized donor tracking system to identify, qualify, cultivate, and manage contacts with individual prospects.
  • Prepare reports and plans for follow-up, cultivation and stewardship services for each donor or prospect contacted.
  • Take responsibility for correspondence and contacts.
  • To close legacy gifts (minimum $50,000,000 or more outright gifts annually).

Qualifications/ Experience:

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
  • Eight or more years in development work or related field which includes responsibilities for building relationships with individuals, or equivalent experience in providing significant levels of client or donor contacts or relationships and experience in soliciting and closing major, leadership level gifts.
  • Possess an ability to take initiative in planning, organizing, and effectively presenting ideas and concepts.
  • Must have exceptional communication skills, strong writing skills and possess the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and problem-solve quickly, as well as work independently and on a team.
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the year.
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certification is preferred.
  • Understanding of charitable tax legislation and other pertinent gift-planning regulations.
  • Ability to work in an environment where teamwork, professional respect, and personal ethics and character are the foundation for achievement; that has an understanding and appreciation for Scouting, its importance and impact, and the experience to share a personal involvement in Scouting (e.g. Eagle Scout, parent of an Eagle Scout, etc.) or another non-profit or community organization.
