1970 - 1979: Scouting at the Bicentennial
In 1971, Scouts again answer the call to service and collect more than one million tons of litter on June 5, “Keep America Beautiful Day”.
In 1972, “Operation Reach”, Scouting’s first program against drug abuse, is launched.
In 1973, The National Eagle Scout Association is formed.
All of Scouting celebrates the nation’s bicentennial in 1976. Sea Explorers serve on sailing ships in New York Harbor and Eagle Scouts spend the summer demonstrating Scouting skills on the Mall in Washington, D.C.
A celebrity PSA campaign debuts with former President and Eagle Scout Gerald R. Ford.
