First Impressions Staff (Ely only)

The First Impressions Staff is responsible for greeting and checking in Northern Tier crews in an enthusiastic and welcoming manner. In addition this department provides a living history program for crews that have finished their expedition and returned to base. First Impressions staff should be detail oriented, have a love for history and acting or musical ability.

Director of First Impressions
Oversees all aspects of the check-in and check-out processes for crews as well the off-water program. To hold this position, you must be 21 years of age, hold a current driver's license with a clean driving record and have or be able to obtain Wilderness First Responder Certification. This position serves as one of two Assistant Base Directors.

Off-Water Program Coordinator
Responsible for the Off-Water living history program including a nightly rendezvous. Works closely with the Director of First Impressions and First Impressions Staff to coordinate the history program on base. To hold this position, you must be at least 21 years of age and hold a current driver's license with a clean driving record. Theater or other performance experience may be highly valued.

Chaplain
Provide a nightly non-denominational vespers service and counseling services to staff and participants. Also responsible for coordinating transportation to religious services for staff. Assist with other aspects of the First Impressions Department. Must be at least 21 years of age, hold a current driver's license with a clean driving record and have theological training, experience or education.

Health Officer
If you have training as a physician, nurse (RN or LPN), physician assistant, medical student, paramedic, or EMT, we would be interested in having you as our health officer. This position is responsible for caring for staff and participants with medical needs, maintaining first-aid supplies, coordinating the medic-on-call schedule and overseeing the medical screening of participants and staff. Must be at least 21 years of age, hold a current driver's license with a clean driving record and have or be able to obtain Wilderness First Responder Certification.

First Impression Staff
Greet crews, check crews in and out of base and participate in the Off-Water living history program. Must be at least 18 years of age.

Food Service Department

The Food Service department provides the bases with healthy and good-to-eat meals while crews and staff are on base.

Director of Food Services
Supervises the overall Food Service/Kitchen/Dining Hall operation. Responsible for maintaining and ordering of food supplies and ensuring cleanliness is maintained in the Food Service operation. To hold this position, you must be at least 21 years of age and hold a current driver's license with a clean driving record.

Head Cook
Responsible for breakfast, lunch, and dinner meal preparation; keeping kitchen areas clean; and supervising other kitchen help. To hold this position, you must be at least 18 years of age and hold a current driver's license with a clean driving record.

Commissary Manager
Responsible for the trail food operation of the program. Duties include ordering food, maintaining food inventories, issuing trail food to crews, keeping the commissary clean, and supervising other Commissary staff. To hold this position, you must be at least 21 years of age and hold a current driver's license with a clean driving record.

Food Service Staff
Assist with meal preparation, kitchen/dining area cleanup, dishwashing and distribution of trail food. Must be at least 18 years of age.

Maintenance

The Maintenance Department handles the day-to-day maintenance for each base.

Maintenance Chief (Atikokan only)
Works closely with the Ranger in Ely to coordinate the Atikokan base maintenance staff. Directs the upkeep and maintenance of the base facilities. To hold this position, you must be at least 21 years of age and hold a current driver's license with a clean driving record.

Maintenance Staff
Assist with upkeep and maintenance of base facilities, canoe repairs and janitorial duties. To hold this position, you must be at least 18 years of age and hold a current driver's license with a clean driving record.

Trading Post (Retail Store)

The Trading Post Department is responsible for the retail sales at Northern Tier. From ordering and receiving to sales, customer service and merchandising, staff get hands-on experience on how a BSA retail operation is run.

Trading Post Manager
Responsible for displays, inventories, sales, simple bookkeeping, cleanliness of the Trading Post and supervising other Trading Post staff. Must be at least 21 years of age, hold a current driver's license with a clean driving record and have sales and computer experience.

Trading Post Assistant Manager
Assist the Trading Post manager with his/her duties concerning displays, inventories, sales, bookkeeping, cleanliness and supervising other Trading Post staff.

Trading Post Clerk
Assist with displays, inventories, sales and cleanup of the Trading Post.

Trail Department

The trail department provides meaningful on trail program to all participants. From leading trips to outfitting, this department specializes in wilderness skills.

Interpreter
Formerly referred to as a guide, this person works primarily with the crews going out on Northern Tier adventures, up to ten days. They provide crews with orientation and outdoor skills training and are a resource to the crew for safety purposes, environmental awareness and historical background of the area. Other duties are assigned as needs dictate, and may include working in any of the other areas of the operation. Must be 18 years of age, have the ability to camp in sometimes extreme weather conditions and have the ability to pass the BSA Swim Test.

Outfitting Interpreter
The Outfitting Interpreters are designated to spend up to 10 days at a time on base instead of in the woods with crews in order to help outfit crews with the equipment they need. Must be at least 18 years of age, have the ability to camp in sometimes extreme weather conditions, have the ability to pass the BSA Swim Test and be able to provide excellent customer service.

Trail Staff Director
This person is responsible for supervising all aspects of the Trail Department including Interpreter and Outfitting. This position also serves as one of two Asst. Base Directors. Must be at least 21 years of age, have a current driver's license with a clean driving record and have or be able to obtain a Wilderness First Responder Certification.

Assistant Trail Staff Director
Assist the Trail Staff Director with the general management of the Trail Department. Must be at least 21 years of age, have a current driver's license with a clean driving record and have or be able to obtain a Wilderness First Responder Certification.

Assistant Trail Staff Director - Outfitting
Responsible for overseeing the outfitting side of the Trail Department. This person manages the Bay Post including maintaining accurate inventory at all times and supervises the Outfitting Interpreters to ensure that all crews have a pleasant outfitting experience and obtain the gear they need. Responsible for holding crews accountable for lost and/or damaged equipment. Must be at least 21 years of age, have a current driver's license with a clean driving record and have or be able to obtain a Wilderness First Responder Certification.
