The national Venturing Division is offering a Kodiak & Kodiak X Course
Directors Course at the exciting Florida Sea Base Brinton Environmental
Center in the beautiful Florida Keys.
This course will prepare participants to plan and run Kodiak and Kodiak
X courses. Councils are encouraged to send one or more representatives
to prepare themselves to run and support the Boy Scouts of America's most
creative and useable team leadership courses. Kodiak offers five leadership
commissions (skills) based on servant leadership. It takes a very
nontraditional approach, using no classrooms. It is an experiential
learning process that can be applied to any activity other than a classroom.
Kodiak X, to be introduced in the summer of 2006, is a weekend leadership
challenge course that tests skills learned in Kodiak. Kodiak may be run by
a crew, a district, or a council, while Kodiak X may be offered only by a
district or council. All Kodiak and Kodiak X courses, however require the
approval of the Scout executive.
When?
January 22-27, 2006. Training will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, January
23, and conclude before lunch on Friday, January 27. However, you will
need to arrive on Sunday, January 22. Some may wish to arrive on Saturday
for reduced airfare. You will need to contact the Sea Base individually
to arrange housing. Expect a 2 1/2 hour drive from the Miami airport or
three hours from Fort Lauderdale. All training will be conducted at Sea
Base's new Brinton Environmental Center, located 23.8 miles north of Key
West. Water activities and off-island activities will be included, so
bring a bathing suit! Dress is casual all week.
Where?
The Sea Base Brinton Environmental Center is located just north of Key
West on Highway 1 at mile maker 23.8.
Cost?
$300 for housing and five nights (January 22-27) in dorm-style rooms.
Registration includes all meals, an out island experience, course materials,
and a Kodiak medal. However, it does not include airfare and transportation
form the airport. You are responsible for making your own airline and
rental car reservations.

The registration form and payment must be received by January 18, 2006.
