Through our 100th Anniversary Celebration, we had a full year of reflecting on Scouting’s great heritage. We heard and shared countless stories of the impact Scouting has had on the lives of young people and, indeed, the very fabric of this great nation. As we move forward into our second century of leadership and service, we have an opportunity to help ensure that America’s youth are Prepared. For Life.™ and that Scouting continues to affect our nation in amazing ways.

To do this, we’re taking specific and intentional steps to be sure Scouting keeps pace with today’s society and to strengthen our role as a recognized advocate for young people—on several fronts. One I’m particularly proud of is our focus on the health and well-being of our youth.

Promoting healthy living has always been a very high priority for the entire organization. So much so, in fact, that last year we officially introduced our healthy living initiative, which seeks to make sure Scouts and all young people are healthy in mind, body, and spirit. The initiative grew out of a shared concern about national trends of shorter life expectancy for our young people. We cannot stand by as an organization and let this continue, particularly when we have the tools, the programs, and the passion to help turn the tide.

I’m excited that, as part of our healthy living initiative, we are working both with first lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move program to solve the challenge of childhood obesity and with the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN) to engage, educate, and empower youth to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity and good nutrition.

I encourage you to use the tools and resources available on this website to help you in your quest to lead a healthy life and promote healthy living, and I also know that when it comes to health and wellness, you will do what Scouts and Scouters have always done: serve and lead. Our ultimate goal is to promote healthier lifestyles—physically, emotionally, and intellectually—because the health and well-being of our nation depends on the health and well-being of our young people.
