The Florida Sea Base announces its newest program, the ultimate fishing adventure. Spend a week in the premier fishing waters of the world where your crew will learn the art and science of big game fishing. Included will be trips out to the Atlantic gulf-stream for deep sea fishing for tuna and mahi-mahi, coral reef fishing for snapper and grouper, night fishing for shark and "back country" fishing in the Gulf of Mexico for bonefish and tarpon. You will also enjoy snorkeling, touring Key West and a Sea Base Luau.
Your crew of 6-8 will arrive after 2 pm on your arrival date at the Brinton Environmental Center located on Summerland Key at mile marker 23.8. After a brief check-in, your fishing mate will give you a tour of the facilities and show you to your quarters. Next is equipment check out. Each participant will be issued a dive bag, mask, snorkel, vest and fins so you can enjoy some snorkeling during the week. Bringing your own snorkeling gear is optional. Quality fishing gear will be issued each day so there is no need to bring your own. There will be a swim check and snorkel lesson in our marina. Next is dinner and an adult and youth crew leader orientation. Finally your crew will get a presentation of the weeks schedule and some information about the marine life in the area.
While at the Brinton Center you will be housed in air-conditioned dormitories overlooking our harbor. There are hot showers and laundry facilities available. All fishing will be with experienced Keys fishing captains, and you will be on Sea Base deep sea power boats or shallow water skiffs leaving from our private marina.
The Florida Sea Base is the first scouting facility in the world to be designated as a S.C.E.N.E. (Scouting Centers of Excellence for Nature and the Environment). In recognition of this, all participants in our programs will be eligible to earn a SCENE segment for their Sea Base participant patch at no cost.
Most of the items on the following "What to Bring List" are carried in our Ship's Store with the exception of shoes, socks, sleeping gear, and pads. Theoretically, the Florida Sea Base supplies everything that you would need for the adventure with the exception of a fishing license. $100 is adequate spending money unless you want to buy a lot of souvenirs.
Being Physically Fit
Every participant in the Florida Sea Base High Adventure program needs to be physically fit for the strenuous demands that will be placed on their body. The Florida Fishing Adventure program is PHYSICALLY CHALLENGING. You will be in the water a great deal, so go swimming with your crew at your local pool often. Do some light exercises to increase your stamina. You will be frequently lifting your body in and out of the water to boats and docks. Make sure you can pass the B.S.A. swim test before you arrive at the Sea Base. Your swimming ability will be assessed upon your arrival to the Sea Base. You have dedicated a lot of your personal time and resources to come to Sea Base. Get the most out of your experience by being ready - physically and mentally.
Note: Anyone weighing over 295 will not be allowed to participate in Sea Base high Adventure programs.
