FSB Marine Sailing STEM
Greetings and Welcome to the Florida Sea Base Marine STEM Sailing Program
This program consists of an arrival day and night on base, a day and night at Sea, and a day at Sea.
One month prior to your arrival at FSB we ask that you provide us with a final count of participants, itinerary, and STEM syllabus or outline.
Your organization should arrive between 2:00 and 6:00 pm on the first day of your STEM Conference. Upon arrival FSB Conference Staff will check you into our facility, give you a tour of the property, outline participant expectations, and show you to your rooms.
Organizations who have arrived early in the afternoon will have the opportunity to complete a swim review, check out snorkel equipment, and complete a snorkel lesson. Organizations arriving later in the afternoon will complete the process the next morning following breakfast.
Dinners will be prepared and served in the FSB Galley at 6:00 pm on the first and final evening of your conference.
Following dinner, Florida Sea Base Staff will outline your itinerary and provide a slideshow depicting the one living coral reef in North America. Elements of fish and coral identification, coral reef conservation and restoration, and proper etiquette will be covered.
Snack will be served at 8:00 pm. Lights out is strictly adhered to at 10:00 pm. Between which times classroom space will be available for use.
Breakfast will be served at 8:00 am all mornings at the Florida Sea Base. Those organizations who have completed the swim review- snorkel lesson will begin by packing lunch at 9:00 am and then provisioning their boat. Those who have not , will pack lunch and provisions after completing the review - lesson.
*Please note that any participant who does not pass the swim review or refuses to participate in the review will not be allowed to snorkel. The individual will be permitted and in some cases required to accompany the group to sea but will be required to wear a PFD.
Once lunches and provisions have been packed and all participants are present, your organization will board an FSB chartered sail boat. Prior to embarking your captain will issue a safety briefing and outline his/her expectations of you as members of his/her crew. While aboard all participants are expected to adhere to any and all safety briefings given by the captain. Horseplay is prohibited.
Your crew will then spend the remainder of the day sailing throughout waters surrounding the Florida Keys, snorkeling, or exploring mangrove islands. The Sea will be your classroom and your captain will adapt the voyage to your request (weather permitting).
As crew of your vessel your organization will help set anchor, prepare meals, and provide anchor watch.
Upon waking your crew will be responsible to prepare breakfast, assist the captain to make ready for departure. Once the vessel and crew are prepared you will set sail for Alligator Reef and Lighthouse for a morning snorkel excursion.
Your crews afternoon will be spent preparing lunch, and sailing to Florida Sea Base.
After your crew has assisted the captain to safely dock your vessel, the crew will be responsible to assist the captain in cleaning the boat and appropriately recycling or discarding refuse. Additionally, with the assistance of FSB Staff, your crew will wash and return snorkel equipment.

To book and attend a FSB STEM conference
- Your organization must provide STEM education as part of your adventure.
- Your organization must be affiliated with the BSA or, be a nonprofit organization, be a federal - state - local government, school, college or university.
- Your organization must register 20 or more participants.
- Troops, Teams, Crews, Explorer Posts, operated as a charter of the Boy Scouts of America must bring at least 6 individuals but may bring up to 8 individuals per vessel.
- All other organizations must bring a total of 6 individuals per vessel.
