2002 BSA Web site redesign
A redesign of the BSA Web site (old.scouting.org) went "live"
on September 16, 2002. Most of the site's content was not moved
during the redesign,so no changes/updates to council sites that import
or link to content are necessary.
However, for the small proportion of content that does move,
it is necessary for council webmasters who import or link to those
resources within the BSA Web site to update their links.
Some forwarding pages (i.e., "this page has moved" with a link to
its new location) have been posted to the old locations and will be
maintained for a reasonable amount of time (most likely, until the
end of 2002).
Notes on specific changes follow:
???.scouting.org becomes old.scouting.org
Completed: 16 Sep 2002
The BSA Web site has long responded to a wide array of domain names:
bsa.scouting.org, www.bsa.scouting.org,
boyscouts.scouting.org, www.boyscouts.scouting.org,
etc., as well as all parked domain names.
All derivative domain names have been directed to a forwarding page
so that the BSA's site can be identified by a single address:
old.scouting.org.
Any link to any deriviative name will break, and the user will be
forwarded to the BSA home page instead.
If your site currently uses a derivative domain name (anything other
than old.scouting.org) it will need to be changed.
In most cases, this will be a simple change. For example:
http://www.bsa.scouting.org/pubs/gss/index.html
... must be changed to to ...
http://old.scouting.org/pubs/gss/index.html
There will be a separate note here for any set of files that will
be moved in the process of redesign.
Changes to old.scouting.org/nav/
Completed: 16 Sep 2002
The navigation directory contains menu interfaces for the BSA site.
These changed radically when the site was redesigned.
Changes to old.scouting.org/art/
Completed: 16 Sep 2002
The primary "art" directory on the BSA site holds the graphics for
the menu interfaces of the site. Since interfaces have been
redesigned, new art has replaced the old.
Movement of old.scouting.org/fsd/give2bsa
Completed: 07 May 2002
The "give 2 BSA" module for accepting on-line donations to local
councils was available at two addresses: old.scouting.org/fsd/give2bsa
and www.give2bsa.org. The former address (which was neer widely
announced) has been eliminated.
If your site currently uses links to the give2bsa module using the
old address (old.scouting.org/fsd/give2bsa), it will be
necessary to change the link to the new address (www.give2bsa.org).
Movement of old.scouting.org/mags/scouting
Completed: 06 May 2002
Scouting magazine was once available by two addresses:
old.scouting.org/mags/scouting and www.scoutingmagazine.org.
The former address has been eliminated.
Any links to the old material on the main site are now broken, and
will need to be redirected to the magazine's new address. A forwarding
page is currently active, but will be removed when it becomes clear that
most traffic has shifted to the new address.
Most files are in the same relative locations. For example:
old.scouting.org/mags/scouting/resources/masthead.html
... moved to ...
www.scoutingmagazine.org/resources/masthead.html
Some files are not in exactly the same places on the new server, so it's
important to test your links.
Information for advertisers has also moved from
old.scouting.org/mags/ads to www.scoutingmagazine.org/ads
Movement of old.scouting.org/mags/boyslife
Completed: 01 May 2002
Boys' Life magazine was once available by two addresses:
old.scouting.org/mags/boyslife and www.boyslife.org.
The first address has been eliminated.
Any links to the old material on the main site are now broken, and
will need to be redirected to the magazine's new address. A forwarding
page is currently active, but will be removed when it becomes clear that
most traffic has shifted to the new address.
Most files are in the same relative locations. For example:
old.scouting.org/mags/boyslife/resources/masthead.html
... moved to ...
www.boyslife.org/resources/masthead.html
Some files are not in exactly the same places on the new server, so it's
important to test your links.
Information for BL advertisers has also moved from
old.scouting.org/mags/ads to www.boyslife.org/ads
Parked Domain Names
Completed: 15 April
The BSA has registered and reserved a number of domain names for future
use. Previously, these names were all directed to the BSA home page, and
there was some confusion over which name(s) were really official (even though
they all pointed to the same site).
To remedy this, most parked domains now return a forwarding page instead
of automatically showing the BSA home page so that it is clear that there is
one official site ... and the rest (others which are widely distributed)
will shortly be remedied.
It is not expected that any council refers to the BSA site by these
domains, so it's unlikely (albeit possible) this will require any action
on your part.
