Boy Scout Uniforms Donated to Scouts in Kenya

A Boy Scout troop in Kenya has new uniforms, thanks to the efforts of a Boy Scout troop in California. Troop 194 of Antioch, California, collected donations from various local vendors and businesses after hearing about 40 Scouts in the Nairobi Kenya Stake whose parents did not have the funds to purchase uniforms. Elder Gordon Passey and Sister Betty Passey, welfare service missionaries in Kenya, alerted their grandson, Michael Evans of Troop 194, of the situation and by September, enough money was collected.

On September 21, 2002, Michael's mother, Cheryl, visited Nairobi and met with the Scouts. Using the money that was donated by the troop, she purchased uniforms from the Kenya Scout office. She also brought with her 40 neckerchief slides made by the young men of Troop 194, and ward young women.

"It was truly heartwarming to see the excitement and happiness of the young boys as they dressed in their new uniforms and looked like real Boy Scouts," said Elder Ferrin Orton, a public affairs missionary in the Southeast Africa area.
