Scouting’s Highest Honor for Service
Diane
Cannon to be honored for years of volunteer service to youth
San Diego, CA – May 23, 2008 — Not your average “den mom,” Diane
Cannon, of The Woodlands, has made a significant impact on thousands of youth
through her volunteer leadership in the Boy Scouts of America. For her commitment
and service, the BSA National Council will honor Cannon with the Silver Buffalo
Award at its Annual Meeting in San Diego on May 23.
The
Silver Buffalo Award, Scouting’s highest commendation for service to youth, has
been awarded annually since 1925 to civic-minded men and women who stand out
for their invaluable contributions and service to the youth of America.
The BSA will
recognize Cannon for her steadfast dedication to youth throughout her
community. Cannon serves as assistant director of SPARK, a non-profit
partnership with the City of Houston Mayor’s Office to build
community parks at area schools. She also has taught conversational English to
international students, counseled families of children with cancer, and
organized a car-seat loaner program for indigent families.
Cannon has made a
significant impact on the Scouting program through 13 years as program chairwoman
of the National Cub Scout Committee and 20 years as an active volunteer. She has
held numerous unit, district, and council positions and now serves as training
chairwoman in the Sam Houston Area Council.
“The Boy Scouts of
America is proud to recognize Diane for her years of service and commitment to
our youth,” said Bob Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive. “She dedicates valuable
time and effort to improve their lives through her involvement with several
community organizations in Houston, including the Boy
Scouts.”
At the national
level, Cannon has led efforts to develop, revise, and update publications
including the Cub Scout Leader Book, Cub Scout Program Helps, Webelos Leader Guide, and Cub Scout Roundtable Planning Guide. She
also chaired the task force that planned Cub Scouting’s 75th anniversary
celebration in 2005.
Cannon has received
the District Award of Merit, as well as the Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope awards.
She is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow and a life member of the
Philmont Staff Association.
Cannon’s husband,
Steve, also is an active Scouter, and her sons, Brian and Brad, are both Eagle
Scouts.
